Networking
Ohio Osteopathic Symposium #OhioOsteo
Each spring, DOs from across the state gather for the Ohio Osteopathic Symposium and Ohio Osteopathic Association House of Delegates. Students are invited to play an integral role in this respected educational event by entering a poster in the annual research competition and exhibition. Many times the Symposium programming includes events designed specifically for students. Medical students are also invited to attend lectures and practice management workshops at no cost.
In addition to providing quality continuing medical education and networking opportunities, the Symposium also offers students leadership development and a chance to engage in policy-making activities. For example, the OOA House of Delegates meets during the Symposium to elect officers, debate resolutions and address issues confronting the profession at the state and national level.
Events
The OOA Board of Trustees has hosted receptions for OU-HCOM students at the Athens, Dublin, and Cleveland campuses as well as events throughout the state. The "study break receptions" offer students an opportunity to talk with OOA Board members and learn about District Academy activities. In addition, OOA Districts often host dinner meetings and other activities with OMS III and OMS IV.
The OOA Board also interacts with members of the OU-HCOM Student Government through leadership training activities and forums.
State Science Day
Every year, since 1988, the OOA presents six Osteopathic Medical Awards in two grade categories during the Ohio Academy of Science's State Science Day. The competition attracts more than 1,000 junior and senior high school students from across Ohio. The OOA works with OU-HCOM's Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) to recruit students to volunteer as judges.
Pre-pandemic, the student volunteers spent the morning in Columbus evaluating projects related to medical, health, and behavioral research (and then enjoyed a complimentary lunch together at a nearby restaurant). The event was moved online in 2020.
