OPPA testifies in support of Senate Bill 207: Co-pay Accumulator

Far too many Ohioans face untreated or undertreated mental illness, often due in part to the high cost of medications. While manufacturer copay assistance can help patients afford treatment, some insurers now use copay accumulator programs that prevent these funds from counting toward deductibles or out-of-pocket maximums—often without patients’ knowledge.

This can result in unexpected costs of thousands of dollars, creating financial strain and leading many patients to skip medications. Reduced adherence worsens symptoms, increases hospitalizations, and can contribute to poor social and economic outcomes.

OPPA urges support for SB 207 to protect patients from unexpected costs and promote continuity of care for mental health and substance use disorder treatment.
